Insomnia

It may go without saying, but when we’re unable to get quality sleep, our physical and emotional health suffers. Those of us who struggle with insomnia know the reality of this all too well. We may experience physical fatigue, drowsiness in the afternoon, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, irritability, even muscle tension.

Acupuncture is an effective means of supporting healthy and lasting sleep, without the side effects of other sleep aids or interventions.

In Chinese medicine, we view insomnia as an imbalance of the vital energies of the body. The body’s hormonal function may be disrupting our circadian rhythms or the body’s internal clock, making it difficult to stay asleep. Or the nervous system’s vigilance response may be making it difficult to wind down, causing the brain to think about tomorrow’s schedule or yesterday’s email rather than relaxing into sleep at bedtime.

Lasting relief from insomnia frequently involves consistent acupuncture treatment to recondition these physiological patterns. That said, patients frequently notice relief after just a single session, and report that the night after a treatment is the soundest night of sleep they’ve had in years.
